Ethiopia’s Tobacco Control Legislation

Ethiopia adopted the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control on June 23, 2014. In 2019, the Ethiopian parliament passed a landmark legislation sponsored by the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (then named Ethiopian Food, Medicine, and Healthcare Administration and Control Authority). This is a major piece of legislation towards a path of controlling tobacco products in the country and limiting its harmful effects, including cancer and other forms of chronic, non-communicable diseases.
